A flagship programme under YMCA of Singapore Tan Chin Tuan Community Service Programmes
About us
A highly supported community service activity of the Community Service Department of YMCA of Singapore was started in 1987. The training workshops for the disabled gradually evolved as personal development camps and it was realized that there was a need to expose the disabled to the general outdoor camping experience. Thus, the community service programme was introduced to fill the gap in the beneficiaries work in Singapore where no large scale camps were held for people of varying disabilities and from different organisations. Over the years, the popularity of such camps has grown tremendously such that the number of campers as well as volunteers has doubled in the past years.
Thus, to mark a new beginning in YMCA's centennial year (2002) for this programme, the programme was named "Pass It On". It is hoped that through such camps, the fires of friendship, the passion of living and the love of God can be passed on. Like the song goes, "It only takes a spark to get the fire going...."
HOW IT BEGAN
HOW IT EVOLVED
In December 2005, the name was changed to Y Camp Challenge. The camps are planned by members of Uni-Ys and volunteers within YMCA umbrella. Over the years the camp has evolved and Y Confidence programme (a programme for the youth-at-risk) is also incorporated into Y Camp Challenge where participants from Y Confidence serve as camp befrienders.
